I wish I had the courage to…
I wonder how you would complete that phrase.
I wonder what is it that you secretly desire, deep in your heart and soul?
I wonder what is it that you ache for, what it is that you’re afraid to go after?
I wonder what big dreams you’ve set aside so that you can meet your small little desires?
And here’s what else I wonder…
I wonder when you’ll stop saying “I wish”.
I wonder how much pain you’re willing to put up with before you finally say enough is enough?
I wonder what needs to happen for you to finally take a risk and jump off the cliff without a parachute?
Here’s the thing. I get it. My first job after graduate school was with the US government.
After 2 1/2 years, I knew I had to get out. A part of me was dying inside, day after day.
Even with that, it took me another 3 1/2 years to build up the courage to step away and start to forge my own path.
I honestly had no concrete plans at that point. I just knew that I couldn’t go on living the way I was living.
And so I took a risk. I leaped.
I won’t say that everything worked out exactly the way I wanted or expected. Life isn’t like that.
But I will tell you this. Taking that leap was by far the best decision I’ve ever made.
Now let’s talk about courage. Courage isn’t about having everything together, about knowing every little detail before taking a risk. It’s not about getting rid of your fears.
If that’s what you want to expect before taking a leap, you’ll be waiting a long, long time.
Courage is knowing that you’re afraid but taking a chance anyway because you can no longer deny what you feel deep in your heart and soul.
Courage is looking at your fear and saying I’m going to do it anyway.
Courage is having faith that somehow, someway you’ll make things work out. And not just work out but that you’ll make your life better than they were before.
So here’s one more thing that I wonder.
I wonder if you’ll find the courage to go after your dreams before it’s too late.
We both know that we’re only here for a short period of time. And that every day you waste NOT going after your dreams is one less day of your single, precious life.
So don’t wait too long. Don’t wait 3 1/2 years like I did.
Now here’s the thing about courage. Sometimes we need a little help along the way. Help from someone who can push us and inspire us and point out the roadblocks along the way. Help from someone who’s been there and knows what it’s like.
And in that spirit, I want to invite you into a conversation.
During the month of October I’m offering a limited number of Create a Life You Love Coaching Sessions. These are 100% free sessions where we can talk about your hopes and dreams and maybe start building up the courage you need to stop saying “I wish”.
At the very least I hope to plant some seeds in you so that someday you can say “I did it!”
If you’re interested in having a conversation with me, just click here.
And if you’re not interested in having a conversation at this point, I do hope this post made you think and maybe planted a seed. And I would love it you let me know how you would respond to the phrase “I wish I had the courage to…”. You can either leave a message below or send me a message via email.
